COMPANION PLANTING Some plants do better when in the company of other plants. Companion planting is using this knowledge to increase plant performance. Companion planting includes planting flowers, herbs or vegetables to repel or trap harmful insects. It also includes using plants to attract useful insects which prey upon harmful insects. People use companion planting as a way of reducing chemical insecticide use.

Gardening Guide

Gardening information and gardening tips from Doug Green If you are like me, gardening is important in your life. In my case, I think I'm pretty lucky to be able to make my living doing what I love to do. Where else can you get paid to help a hummingbird take a shower? Where taking a nap beside blooming hellebores is a mandatory part of the job? Where fragrance-testing roses is part of the job description? And, where you have to write about all of these things for other gardeners?
It's a tough life but somebody has to do it. :-)

Gardening Guru's page! The horticultural help you have been looking for is here, just for the asking. I am the Gardening Guru, here to answer the most perplexing gardening questions. I have numerous years of experience in the horticulture field, from owning my own landscaping business for over 15 years, being a general manager of a wholesale/distributor/retail landscape supply establishment, a landscape supervisor of an 81 acre park for six years, to finally being an Executive Director of the Reeves-Reed Arboretum located in Summit, New Jersey. I have a wealth of information to share with you, just ask the questions. In this web page we will answer questions, offer suggestions for what can be accomplished during the applicable season, to amuzing trivia and thoughtless wonderings (does that make sense?). When asking questions, please specify area of the country you are from, Zone #, site conditions (sunlight, soil type etc.), and finally, your question. All of my life I have tried to give as much back as I have learned, and the web is making my "giving" on a larger scale. Even though I can share what I have learned to you over the web, the best person you can talk to for more specific questions is your local Agricultural Extension Agent. They are there to help you with gardening as much as I am. If you like this page, bookmark it for future use. I update it every month with new and unusual information. If you like this page, tell a friend and share a good thing! Also sign up for my monthly newsletter, which includes even more tips and tricks that I don't list on the web page.

Welcome to Gardening! Important to all, however, are improving soil conditions, mulching, and learning how to irrigate wisely and efficiently. As insect pests begin to arrive it's important to learn which ones are visiting your garden at various times thru the season, and the best methods for handling them if they become overly troublesome. Healthy plants that are properly sited in soils of improved fertility and irrigated wisely will often prosper well in spite of these pests.
